The first-generation M-class Mercedes-Benz (W163 series) began to be produced at the newly built plant in the US state of Alabama in 1997. In
order to avoid confusion with the BMW M models, the car modification indices were changed to ML.
"M-class" could rightly be called an SUV - it had a carrying frame and permanent all-wheel drive with a reduction gear. The model was very popular, so the power of the American
plant was increased to 80 thousand cars a year, and in addition, the assembly of SUVs was organized in Austria, at the company Magna Steyr.
